Bamboo Bulbs
We live in a time where innovation and technological advancements seem to come every other week. So, it seems strange that we, nationally and internationally, have used the same lightbulb for over 140 years. Thomas Edison filed his first light bulb patent in 1880, and after years of research and development, he and his researchers had developed the best way to make a long-lasting filament—carbonized bamboo.
Changing Production
As of 2020, the evolution of the bulb has seen many changes, from carbonized bamboo, tungsten, to mercury fueled CFL’s, to now LED’s, or light emitting diodes. In 2007 Pres. George W. Bush, signed a bill into action to phase out the energy wasting bulbs of the past to be put out of production by 2020, giving manufacturers 13 years to change their business models and adapt to the new green way of lighting.
How do light bulbs affect me?
A lot of money is at stake here in switching to more energy efficient lighting. For example, according to the National Resources Defense Council, there are 250 million incandescent light bulbs still in use in California. If all those light bulbs were switched out to LED bulbs, the electricity savings would equate to about $1 billion.
For a more direct example, incandescent bulbs can use up to five times more electricity than LED bulbs. On average, 20% of electricity costs for a household goes to lighting. So, if you use incandescent lighting and your electricity bill is $100 per month, $20 of that is lighting. If you switched to all LED lights, that would save you $16 per month, $832 per year, for bulbs that last 20X longer, shine brighter, are recyclable, safe and shatter-proof. The benefits of going green, benefits you.
Big Rebates to Switch
It is 2021, bulbs are no longer made from bamboo or rare minerals dug out of caves. Switching a multi-family home or business to become more energy efficient is safer and cheaper than ever, especially if you live in Buffalo NY or the WNY area. There are currently huge rebates offered by both National Grid and NYSEG in Upstate New York that will improve the lifespan of your lighting and lighten up your electricity bills.
National Grid’s rebate program in Buffalo and WNY for LED lighting retrofitting will cover 60% of all installation costs. This is not major construction for your multi-family residence or business, it is a simple installation with a rather quick return on investment from your energy savings.
